Google custom search can end up being the plumming of searching in the future. I didn't realize this before, but making the one API available to everyone and letting anyone filter the results ends up as a simple and strong tool.
This of course has an implication on vertical searching, as it might be able to commoditize parts of it, and push more innovation on the presentation of the results. However, I do still think that the Google search engine is not the omnipotent solution we think it is, and every part of it will be heavily challenged, even the crawling part.
More interestingly, this creates an interesting possibility for users to get even more out of their searching. With simple filtering you can create a more meaningful Google for all your music junkie friends or deliver a specialized engine for any kind of specialized community. This is a lot more simpler than waiting for a vertical engine to come across your special niche. Over some time, GCS based searches could actually form into one kind of social networking, where people share their search filters and therefore also their interests.
